Back in the seventies, Citizen Band radio was a big thing. Known simply as CB, we could use it to talk to each other, car-to-car, whilst driving. It was pretty cool grabbing the handset and saying "10-4 for a copy" to hook up with random strangers. Probably the seventies analogue version of going online today. And back then big aerials were king. The bigger the aerial, the cooler you were.
Well, today I'm using comms again, to keep in touch with Kate whilst she wizzes round the track in practice. And technology has moved on so much. No six foot aerials, no twiddling with knobs to find frequencies, and no scratchy hissy sound. We're using Cardo Packtalk Edge units, and boy they're good. Crystal clear audio, instant connection when the units are attached to Kate's helmet and my headphones, and I can hear everything that's going on in Kate's kart. Kate's just been driving round the Rye House track and I heard the screeching of her tyres, her intakes of breath from the g-force, and the mutterings when corners haven't gone well. Of course I've been giving her some constructive feedback (honest), and it's been so much fun. We're just about to go into another practice session, and I can't wait to tell her how she's doing. It's all hassle free. Maybe I can stick a big aerial on my head and make some hissy sounds for that period effect...
