Two and a half weeks ago I was standing at marshal post 5 on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit. Today, courtesy of a simulator session on Buckmore Park's Driver Development Programme, Kate flew past my marshal point with tyres screeching.
It was déjà vu, but this time I was seeing it from the driver's perspective. The simulator was mesmerisingly realistic. In a familiarisation drive before marshalling, I'd been jostled and bounced around the Indy circuit in a mini-bus, but that was nothing compared to the super-fast driving Kate was doing in her simulated Mazda MX5. And the only damage from Kate's numerous spins and collisions was not to car or driver, simply to pride.
I was itching to have a go, but this was only for the lads and lasses on the programme. And the £10k price tag for the entry-level simulator means it might be a while before I do get a go.
Needless to say, Kate has started compiling a shopping list of parts to build her own...
