When Kate started her second 2-hour stint in Buckmore's 12-hour endurance yesterday, the man on the balcony standing next to me asked what we'd given her. That was because she was flying. She was flooring it down the hill, and finding gaps between karts that just didn't seem to be there. There was one moment when she took the inside line alongside a group of six karts (and we all know that three karts into a corner won't go, let alone six karts!), and then she turned unbelievably into the middle of the group. There were people on the balcony covering their eyes. Surely it was going to be a pile -up. She was travelling flat out down the hill when she just turned into the group, and she simply weaved through without letting off the throttle. It was magical, breathtaking and fearless. I couldn't believe this was my Kate. People on the balcony were applauding. No-one was watching the leaders anymore, they were just watching Kate.
It was a phenomenal drive, and kept the team in P4, which is where we finished the race.
Kate was a last-minute substitution into Team ARD after they put out an urgent call for a replacement driver. Team captain Gary Coombes was delighted with her performance, saying that he was so proud of her. In yesterday's blog I talked about Hughie Green's 'Opportunity Knocks' clapometer. Well, after Kate's second stint, the needle would've been off the gauge. And Kate's more than likely to be asked to race for Team ARD again. Gary is talking about the Le Mans 24 hour...
Fantastic! Well done Kate.
