For our endurance races we use a pit board. It’s great. We display position, last lap time, and remaining session time. And we put up ‘pit’ or ‘fuel’ when it’s time for a driver change.
This has worked well, and our drivers find it really helpful. But, it’s a massive amount of work for the person manning the pit board (ie me).
I could hardly walk after our first 3-hour race at Buckmore. I updated the information every lap. Laps were about 60s. That’s 180 laps in a 3-hour race. The pit board letters were on the floor, so I found myself doing a squad every minute for 3 hours. No wonder my quads were pumped up at the end of the race, and no wonder I could hardly walk the day after!
So, I thought, what if we had an electronic pit board? I could sit in a comfortable chair with a laptop and update it with any information. Nice idea, but they cost thousands.
Well, I like building things, and I like projects. So, my home-made electronic pit-board is almost ready (for a fraction of the cost of a commercial one), and I’m looking forward to trying it at the next 3-hour at Buckmore on 14 September 2024. Why not come along and see it in action!
