Give and take

Updated: Sep 22

Fresh after last night's P1 success in the Super 90 at Rye, Kate Broadbent was off early this morning to the 'bomb crater' to teach adults and kids how to ride trials bikes. Known as the 'bomb crater', the little piece of land near Wainscott is a hollow, pockmarked with shell holes and covered by trees that have grown since the second world war, making it an ideal place to practise motorcycle trials.

Kate, a member of the Bexleyheath and District Motorcycle Club, was giving rather than taking by teaching an old dog James new tricks, whilst I ran round the hollow with Fred (completely new to motorcycles!) on a tether.

It's not an easy thing, trials. Most people can ride a motorcycle in a straight line quickly, but take away the seat and ask them to ride it slowly in tight circles over obstacles and it's a different matter.

Kate is super patient though, and a master of explanation, and James was soon doing routes through the trees and up and down obstacles like a pro. Meanwhile, Fred had moved from electric bike on tether to a 2-stroke Gas Gas riding free. The smile on his face brought a smile to my face.

Kate did manage a little practice too, although it's 4 wheel tomorrow with Club 100 at Bayford Meadows!
